Easter Waste

Since this past weekend was Easter, I'm sure many of you had family dinners with an assortment of food dishes.

This is the question I have for you:

Would you say you waste more food when you are with your families, or when you are at school in the cafeterias?

12 PIECES of cake just prior to being tossed into the trash due to over ordering in Yakeley Cafeteria in West Circle.

Not a big deal?

Multiply this typical everyday waste by the approxiamate 210 days of the year the cafeteria is open.  Also keep in mind that Yakeley is one of the smallest cafeterias on campus.  This is just dessert...

More affordable eating on campus

I am sure you are all aware that food prices are increasing all across the country. This causes the price of student meal plans to increase. But what if for a change, the cost of the meal plans went down? If everyone became aware of the food issue at hand and made an effort to waste less, this would decrease the cost of food

Some Alternatives

There are some possible alternatives to the food waste issue here on campus:

-All of the collected scraps can be sent to farms on campus to be used as animal feed

-Composting instead of being put straight into the landfills

-Fertilizer

-Pre-consumer waste can be donated to local food banks

-Food waste could be used to power factories

Do you have any other ideas?

Did you know...?

-Each person at MSU wastes about 1.54 lbs of food in one week.

-14,121 lbs of food wasted in MSU cafeterias EACH DAY

-3,669,120 lbs of food wasted in MSU cafeterias EACH YEAR

What can you do to decrease these numbers?

Observe & Report

Sitting in the cafeteria and I thought to myself, during big events is when food is wasted the most. Examples of these events are: Black History Month, Chinese New Year, Italian Night, and bi-weekly special events.

Question: Have you noticed that during these special events more food is wasted? Is it because you didn't like the food, or is your attention elsewhere?

Have you wasted today?

Welcome again to our blog which is focused on food waste at Michigan State University. Most students on campus can simply walk into any cafeteria and notice the vast amount of food that is still left on the trays once people are finished eating. These leftovers can range from a piece of pizza to several entrees that the person simply didn't eat.

Just because you aren't paying for your meal at the time, are you more inclined to not think about how much you are wasting?

How much have you wasted today?
